Croquet veteran of thirty years, Martin Clarke made heads spin when he demonstrated a series of tactics that are set to revolutionize social play at Nedlands Croquet Club.
The renown coach of both codes (Association Croquet and Golf Croquet) led the interested group of 12 club members through tips of how best to position your ball; run hoops; control your ball when dispatching the opponent’s; Rules and many useful hints.

Staff from ‘The Italian Closet’ were treated by their boss to a post-Christmas celebration comprising style, fun and laughter while playing croquet for the first time!
It had been difficult for the firm to celebrate in the traditional manner during the retail Christmas rush, so a sunny afternoon in late January was chosen to hold the event.

Party guests were spoilt during their game of croquet when delicacies and hors d’oeuvres were served by professional caterers without players even having to come off the courts for a nibble!

Those words were uttered by Matt after he’d finished playing croquet for the first time with fellow members of the UWA Cricket Club.

Nedlands Croquet Club Turns 91 Years Old!
Life Member Barbara Wilson held the honour of cutting the cake to mark the Club’s 91st birthday during its 2021 Trophy Day presentations.
Awards were made to those who had won or come in as runners-up in the Club’s Golf Croquet championship competitions during 2021. Treasurer Val Hogan won the Jocelyn Eddie Award for the Most Improved Member of the year.

Nedlands Croquet Club Member Wins ‘A’ Grade Golf Croquet Tournament!
Michael Trefusis-Paynter always felt one day, he would win a major croquet event. And after 10 years of playing, it happened!
On the last Tuesday in May 2021, Michael won the Croquetwest ‘2020/21 One Day Singles ‘A’ Grade’ tournament at the Forrest Park Croquet Club.

The Tradition Continues at Nedlands Croquet Club!
It was no April Fool’s joke when Ben Devenish brought a 50 year-old mallet to a private function held on 1 April 2021.
The mallet had been passed down to him from his grandfather, whose wife, Mrs W Devenish, was Club President during the years 1970 t0 1973.
The family lived directly opposite the Club at the time, and Ben can recall watching his grandfather play with the very same mallet!

Many hands make light work at Nedlands Croquet Club!
The Club has reopened after being closed for 6 weeks from early December 2020 for the lawns to be de-thatched and provided a chance to replenish. Once the playing surfaces were ready for action, it didn’t take long for our generous band of volunteers to reset the courts and create hoop-holes in the right places!

Shedding the old image at Nedlands Croquet Club
During a recent 3-day ‘Team Trials’ event, the State’s top 32 golf croquet players fought it out in a gruelling series of mixed doubles, mens singles and ladies singles matches at three venues across Perth.
The surprise player of the tournament was Henry Smith, a young man in his late twenties. Henry, who only recently returned to croquet after a break of several years, decisively beat the top two men’s seeds according to World Rankings.

Henry hails from the Bunbury Central Croquet Club, and is an inspiration to other young competitive people to have a go at this vibrant and challenging sport!

Nedlands Croquet Club – the Winner!
The annual ‘Nedlands/Cambridge Friendly’ was held on Sunday 1 Nov 2020, with Nedlands taking out the trophy for the 5th time in eleven years. Although the friendly rivalry was fierce, the outcome was in doubt until the last round of 4 matches. Nedlands won 10 games to 6.

New trolleys for Nedlands Croquet Club!
Four new trolleys!
Through the generosity of a Club member, four beautifully-dressed new trolleys were unveiled in a brief ceremony and presented in late August 2020, as a gift to the Club. The trolleys are indeed a blessing to players who can now more easily set-up and dismantle hoops and courts. The trolleys also facilitate storage in a single place for ancillary equipment used during a croquet game or competition.

Nedlands Croquet Club hosts the Covid19 Cup and Isolation Shield!
After a break of four months from competitive play, 32 tournament-starved croquet players from Busselton, Dunsborough, Bunbury, Narrogin, York and five Perth clubs, graced Nedlands’ four lawns to battle it out in WA’s new singles Covid19 Cup, and Isolation Shield doubles.

Nedlands takes out the 2019 Annual Nedlands/Cambridge Friendly trophy!
A great day of social and competitive play was had by all who recently contested in the Annual Nedlands/Cambridge Friendly. The event was hosted by the Cambridge Croquet Club, who reluctantly relinquished the trophy after Nedlands won the event – 10 games to 6.

Torben Bak crowned WA’s 2019 Golf Croquet State Champion!
Torben Bak (Forrest Park Croquet Club) won his first WA GC State Open Singles title over the WA Day long weekend.

The event was played over 3 days in early June 2019 at the Como and Nedlands Croquet clubs. Torben’s win takes him to the No 143 spot in World Rankings (5th highest player in WA and 13th in Australia). WA currently has 5 players in Australia’s top 15 world-ranked players which demonstrates how competitive the sport is in our State.

The New Zealand Golf Croquet team (pictured below), narrowly beat a crack Australian team, 9 matches to 7 in the very closely fought three-test Trans-Tasman competition played in Victoria at the end of April 2019.

Nedlands courts the best in WA for the country’s top Association Croquet tournament!
Congratulations to Team Victoria for winning the 2019 Eire Cup hosted by WA last month! This annual prestigious award was hard fought between six Australian states, with NSW coming 2nd.
Western Australia was in 3rd place.

The tournament was played over 5 days at three 4-court venues in Perth. Team Victoria Captain Stephen Forster (middle, front row above), said, ‘I thought the Nedlands courts were the best of the lot. They definitely are the best l have seen of them in the past 18 years, (5 visits)’.

Many hands make light work at Nedlands Croquet Club!
Croquet players from four different clubs assisted in levelling the surface of two courts at our club. The eastern boundary edges of Courts 1 and 2 had been dipping a little, and required a pile of sand to help build the surface back to a ‘level playing field’ – literally!

Not only was the weather glorious, but the 16 participants had a really great time! Ladies came from as far afield as Narrogin, Busselton and York. The competition was a Rotating Doubles, with players in each block of 8, coupling up with a different doubles-partner for every new game played. Quiz Night – a truly ‘smashing’ evening!
Nedlands Croquet Club hosted a fun-filled Quiz Night on Friday 24 February 2017. Exciting play at Nedlands Croquet Club during 2016 Australian Golf Croquet Championships
In early Sept 2016, Nedlands Croquet Club jointly hosted the 2016 Australian Golf Croquet Championships. Teams from six states across Australia and individual players took to the lawns at seven venues to battle it out in four different events held over 12 days. Participants varied in age from a budding sixteen year-old future star, to interstate champions in their eighties.

New Quadway Hoops pose a new challenge to Club players
Our new Quadway hoops will provide an even greater challenge to croquet players!
The Club recently acquired four new sets of Quadway hoops. Quadway hoops demonstrate a major improvement in hoop design, by facilitating easy and fast adjustments to the hoop width without affecting existing hoop holes. Adjustments are made through the use of a simple Allen key on screws that rotate the hoop uprights. Up to four different width settings can be achieved in this way.
Another distinctive characteristic of Quadway hoops are the square carrots (made of medium tensile steel) which promote rigidity and stability.

UK Visitor to Nedlands Croquet Club Returns the Compliment!
Tim Johnson, visitor and friend of Nedlands Croquet Club, recently treated Nedlands Croquet Club member Michael Trefusis-Paynter to a game of croquet at his croquet club in Lodsworth, West Sussex on a beautiful autumn day in mid-September 2015.
Lodsworth is one of the newest and smallest clubs in the UK.
Lodsworth Croquet Club has only one lawn but boasts 70 members!
Three days earlier, Tim and Michael had enjoyed watching some of the UK’s top players in action at the West Sussex County Croquet Club – one of the largest clubs in the UK with eleven lawns!

Nedlands Croquet Club – 2015 Fun Tournament 12/13 Sept 2015
The theme for the annual 2015 Nedlands Fun Tournament was ‘Around the World’.
Participants were invited to dress in national costume to help make the event as colourful and vibrant as it always is!

Martin Clarke takes out the 2015 Nedlands Croquet Club GC Singles title
Australia’s No 4 ranking Golf Croquet player, won the title of the Club’s 2015 Annual GC Singles Championship with Richard Lee the runner-up.

Former Nedlands Croquet Club Treasurer, Elizabeth Goode passes away
On Tuesday 3rd March 2015, Elizabeth Goode passed away peacefully. Nedlands Croquet Club members Barbara Wilson, Gwen Swarbrick and Elaine Bonds attended a ‘beautiful funeral service’ on Monday 16th March 2015 at St. Luke’s Anglican Church, Mosman Park.
Barbara remembers Elizabeth as, ‘An amazing lady who did so much for other people in her lifetime. She was the Treasurer of Nedlands Croquet Club for many years, amongst the other positions she held elsewhere. She also had an amazing memory for birthdays and family names.
We were very pleased to have attended her farewell’.

Naked Croquet!
Nedlands Croquet Club kicks off its Naked Croquet Program on Tuesday 10 March 2015.
Participants will have the chance to paint a live model under instruction from one of Perth’s most respected artists, then learn the bare facts of, and play one of the most exciting sports around – golf-croquet! (Click here to see a 5 minute clip of our 2014 Annual Fun Tournament!)

Nedlands Croquet Club’s 2014 Trophy Day – a celebration in style

Nedlands Croquet Club held its annual Trophy Day on the afternoon of 9 August 2014 and was graced by the presence of several special guests – MLA for Nedlands, the Hon Bill Marmion, Mayor of Nedlands Max Hipkins, and Club Sponsors Emma and Adam Gilbert of Realmark.
Trophies were presented to the winners and runners-up of Club tournaments held during the year, and members enjoyed an assortment of delicacies, followed by brief addresses from our honoured guests.

Nedlands Croquet Club launches the inaugural Anne Tothill Tournament
Tournament Manager Helen Eagle and Mr Peter Tothill
The Anne Tothill Tournament is named after a past active member of our Club who kindly left us a small bequest to be used in developing Association Croquet (AC) Division 3 and 4 players.
Helen Eagle, an accomplished AC player herself, devised and organised the tournament which attracted 16 Division 4 entrants from clubs all over Perth.
Guest of Honour was Mr Peter Tothill, 96 year-old brother of the late Anne, who was accompanied by his daughter Wendy.
Peter, who still plays golf, expressed delight at being invited to Nedlands Croquet Club to present the prizes.
